Malda College Library began its existence in the year 1944. Since then it has grown in size and content along with the college to take the present shape. All these years the library has been the life line for the academic activity of the institute. It is well established and not only caters to the need of the undergraduate students, but also the postgraduate students, research scholars and the faculty. It is the main source of knowledge and also the integral part of the institution
It is housed in a separate building having two floors (of which the ground floor is known as Department of Geography and the first floor is the present library) on an area of about 404 sq.m. The library has a collection of more than 28500 print volumes which includes Text Books, Reference Books, Magazines and Journals. Library housekeeping operation is automated using ‘KOHA Software’ (an Open Source Library Management Software). The book database is accessible through OPAC (On-line Public Access Catalogue).
There are some Departmental Seminar Libraries in our college. Users of that concerned department can also utilize the libraries.
Our college is a beneficiary member of UGC- Info-net Consortium, which provides Desktop Access to high quality e-resources (on-line journals and e-books) and the same are accessible in the library terminals allotted for the library users easily.
The library has installed Broadband connection having 2mbps bandwidth. This is a free service which is available in the library in all library hours. Any bona fide member of the library can get Internet facilities within the library premises. Library has a well equipped Xerox facility. The users can avail of this facility on payment of a nominal charge.
The Library Committee of Malda College Library is not a statutory body. It is constituted by the Malda College Governing Body. The existing Library Committee is consisted of the following members:-

Users Orientation Programme and Demonstration Programme are organized whenever required by the users in the library. and its qualitative development,

The college library is kept open six days in a week (except Sunday and Govt. and Scheduled UGB Holidays) as per the following schedule:-
On Weekdays – 10.30 hrs to 17.30hrs.
On Saturday – 10.30 hrs to 14.00 hrs.
The library circulation counters will remain open from 10.45 hrs to 16.00 hrs on weekdays and from 10.45 hrs to 13.00 hrs on Saturday.
The library has a collection of more than 29,340 print volumes which includes Text Books, Reference Books, Magazines and Journals. Besides that it has about 135000(One lakh thirty-five thousand) of eBooks as well as more than 6,000 (Six thousand) of e-journals through NLIST of INFLIBNET. All information materials are arranged in a definite and logical order. The information materials are organized and shelved according to Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme (20th ed). At present the library maintains open access for the staff members of the college and close access for the student users.

Malda College library has a key role in supporting the academic activities of the institution by establishing, maintaining and promoting the following services, both quantitatively and qualitatively.

Current issues of journals and periodicals are made available to the student and faculty members in the Reading Room only. No issue of journals and periodicals are issued for home under any circumstances. However, users are permitted to get photo copies of the same as per library norms.
- OPEN ACCESS
Open Access is given to all the Teaching and non teaching staffs of the college. Although, we are planning to provide this facility for all the library users in future.
- READING ROOM FACILITY
Reading Room Facility is available for both the students and the faculty members during the library hours. Study materials regarding competitive examinations such as UPSC, WBCS, WBSSC, Banking Services etc. are kept in the Career Guidance Cell of the library and users can use the same on production of library reading room card. Current Journals are also displayed on racks which can be issued on library reading room card only. However, users are permitted to get photo copies of the same as per library norms.
- INTERNET FACILITY
Internet facilities are available for the library users free of cost for their academic purpose only from the terminals (at present 16 terminals) allotted for them in the library during library hours.
The college library subscribes to 06 newspapers and 06 magazines for the interest of the general users. These are available and displayed in the library reading room for reading purposes only.
5.USER AWARENESS SERVICES
User awareness programme is organized from time to time whenever a new service or new programme is introduced. Users Orientation Programme and Demonstration Programme are organized whenever required by the users in the library.
6.CURRENT AWARENESS SERVICES
The list of new arrivals is displayed on the notice board for information of the users. New arrivals (books) are displayed in the Display Corner for a week. The college library subscribes to 06 newspapers and 06 magazines for the interest of the general users. These are available and displayed in the library reading room.
The reference books are made available to the users during the library hours. The personal assistance for the users’ guidance and help is provided, if required to the new users to make use of the same.
8.CAREER GUIDANCE SERVICES
- A collection of preparatory documents of various services UPSC, WBCS, WBSSC, Banking Services etc. are kept in the Career Guidance Cell of the library and users can use the same on production of library reading room card.
- The college library subscribes to 06 newspapers and 06 magazines for the interest of the general users.
The library has offering reprographic services to its users against a nominal payment @ Rs. 0.50 per copy (subject to a maximum of 20 pages per user per day). Reserved / reference books and other documents which are not permitted to borrow are permitted for Xerox maintaining the reprography rules.
10.QUESTION PAPERS & SYLLABUS SERVICES
A digital archive of University Question Papers & Syllabuses is created; users can get photocopies or soft copies of the same as per the library rules.
11.LIBRARY FACILITY TO OUTSIDE READERS
The Malda College Library is primarily meant for the bona fide students, Departmental Staffs, Non-teaching employees of the college. Besides, the Administrative Members, ex-students of and ex-staffs of the college, visiting members of the other institutions, and members of the college Alumni Association may also avail the facilities of the library as per existing norms.
Malda College Library is fully computerised. The Library has created electronic database of near about 28500 copies of books using “KOHA Software” (3.06.04.000 version), an Open Source Library Management Software. The library is having its OPAC system. The facilities are as follows:
- Information about any book and periodical within a fraction of second to the user.
- Online Public Access Catalogue allows the users to find any book of his/her interest.
- New arrival book list provides updates of library collection.
- Computerised circulation provides details and statistics of reading for users, etc.
